What is a labyrinth?

A Labyrinth is an ancient circular diagram found in many cultures around the world. In its classical form, this sacred diagram consists of a single concentric circular path with no possibility of going astray. Labyrinths are designed to assist you in finding your way. It is not a maze; mazes are intended to puzzle and confuse you. Labyrinth walking is an ancient practice used for spiritual centering.

The Labyrinth is a path of prayer, meditation, contemplation and transformation. It is with intention that one walks the single path that weaves to the center and back out again. The labyrinth is designed for you to find your way and to connect to who you are – to your authenticity. Every experience is different as the intention you set creates the journey.

You may find that a labyrinth quiets your mind, opens your heart and grounds your body, creating a sense of wholeness for you. Deepening self-knowledge and insight into your personal journey. You may experience healing in your physical, emotional and mental bodies as well as answers to long asked questions. For me it is often where linear time meets eternity, a precious and sacred space which empowers creativity.

Before you enter the Labyrinth set your intention. Acknowledge the Labyrinth with a bow, nod or simple greeting and step forward letting go on entry, shedding distractions, releasing thought. There is no wrong way to walk the Labyrinth. It is ok to not follow the path – you can walk directly to the center if it is calling you. You can skip, dance, sing, pray or whatever moves you. The center is a place of wisdom, stay as long as you like, it’s not about knowing everything it’s about self-discovery. Upon leaving the center, open your mind and open your heart to receive all that has come into your awareness. As you exit acknowledge the Labyrinth as you desire. Your journey need not end here. Often you are called to walk the gardens, hug a tree, sit in the grass, journal or simply be.

The Labyrinth is a sacred walk that mirrors your soul.
